A Custom App for the Little Free Library
Read all about it! We customized an existing Shopify site with storied results

We were pleased when Little Free Library reached out to us for help with a new feature for their Shopify site.

Once upon a time...

We love the idea of Little Free Library, a nonprofit organization that inspires a love of reading, builds community and sparks creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world. It’s a concept we can really get behind. Through Little Free Libraries, millions of books are exchanged every year, greatly increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds.

Each Little Free Library in the network is registered and sports an aluminum sign with its charter number and a standard message, but for stewards that want to dedicate their Library to a loved one or a community inspiration, they can choose a personalizable custom sign from the site’s store.

The Quest

Our client asked us for a custom live preview feature on the product detail page for their Custom Aluminum Charter Sign. Using standard HTML and Javascript to create a live, interactive text preview, our developer, Chris, then integrated it into their existing Shopify theme, and associated it with the specific product.

Now, stewards are able to add their own message over up to three lines of text, seeing how it will look on their custom sign as they type, while the feature automatically calculates text size and line lengths to optimize the layout. Once the steward is happy with how it looks, their custom text is added directly to the line item in the shopping cart using Shopify’s line item properties feature.

A storybook ending

We’re happy, because we’re proud of our creation. Customers are happy, because they can see what their custom product will look like before ordering. Little Free Library is happy, because their order process for customized signs has been simplified. And the communities that are served by these generous Little Free Library stewards? They’re happy too.
