Giving a modern update to an historic museum.

With locations in downtown Halifax and Yarmouth, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is the largest art museum in Atlantic Canada. Since 1908, the Gallery has been a gateway for the visual arts in Atlantic Canada by engaging people with art.

The Gallery needed a major overhaul to their existing website, one that would give them a fresh, mobile friendly home with modern features, while still paying attention to their roots and history.

Shopify implementation

We integrated Shopify to handle all sales, both online and with an easy-to-use modern point of sale system in the Gallery.

We built an online sales portal that allowed them to capitalize on the success of the feature film Maudie - a drama about Nova Scotia's own Maud Lewis. This created an entirely new, high revenue stream for the Gallery's gift shop. Using Shopify's POS for their onsite retail organization means all sales are in one place.

Our own work of art

Using our team of in-house designers, developers, and strategists we worked hard to create our own modern work of art, so to speak.

We made sure the Gallery's new homepage was visually appealing, but also focussed on promoting membership through increased social engagement. The backend design, although not visible, was simple and easy for Gallery administration to update.

We also performed a complete content audit with a focus on improving the user experience for guests. We spent time on integrating both locations and made it easy to find important details such as locations, hours of operation, admissions, and current and upcoming exhibitions.

Branding and marketing

As part of the website refresh, we created and named a new branded blog - Beyond the Frame. This lets the Gallery expand their marketing efforts to an entirely new channel.

We also helped them expand seamlessly with their e-mail marketing, creating branded Mailchimp templates and a pop-up widget to increase newsletter sign-ups.
