Moving a Nova Scotia winery gem entirely onto Shopify.
We have been working with Grand Pré winery since Able Sense’s early beginnings. We designed and developed their previous website on WordPress, which had its own time to shine and we have received many compliments for over the years. But times change and so do business needs.
In 2014, we had created an online wine shop for Grand Pré winery on Shopify, which was on a separate domain but accessible from their WordPress website. Customers started placing orders right away and we would eventually use it to sell more than just wine – from event tickets to Chef Jason Lynch’s food products. By 2018, Shopify had expanded their content management system tremendously and there really was no reason not to move Grand Pré’s entire online operation over. So that’s exactly what we did.

Fresh New Look
Although we had all of Grand Pré’s products in Shopify already and it had been performing well for some time, moving all online content over to Shopify was a perfect time for a fresh new look.
Starting with the Product
We had recently redesigned Grand Pré's wine bottle labels and we were excited to carry through the new look and feel online.
The new design is a true reflection of the authentic Grand Pré brand – elegant and approachable. The minimal layout leaves room for the striking images and concise content to tell the Stutz family’s story.
New Navigation & Shopify Sections
A fresh start is also a great time opportunity to review content. We did a lot of work to streamline Grand Pré’s website content so customers could be guided through the website and always find exactly what they need, from planning their visit to placing an online order.
We used Shopify’s sections to bring life and dimension to the main pages – Our Story, Le Caveau, Visit Us – where separate sections are used to highlight different content and offer CTA buttons to learn more on pages when necessary. Using sections also makes it easy for the team at Grand Pré to manage content and make updates easily where most content is now quickly accessible by customizing the theme.
Since the number one question Grand Pré is most often asked is, “When are you open?” we knew we had to make their hours of operation always accessible. Erin designed the hours widget to sit nicely on the side and out of the way of content while always being recognized so interested visitors can refer to it at any point on their journey through the website. The hours widget is also easy to update as the seasons progress and the wine shop and Le Caveau hours change.
Grand Pré hosts a variety of events throughout the year, from music to movies in the vineyard and featured dinners. We found that they only ever used their previous blog on WordPress to promote events so we decided to take over the blog on Shopify for events. Blog posts now contain details about events and we created a page template for events so the Grand Pré team can customize which they would like featured on the Events page. They can also customize the dates shown and the CTA button text.
Full disclosure, we’ve been asking Grand Pré to make the 100% move to Shopify for some time and we were very excited when they agreed to take the leap. Working so closely throughout the years with Grand Pré in an agency relationship has kept us very close to the staff, brand, and their overall strategy. Being able to help them streamline their online presence with a fresh look that represents the Stutz family and the wonderful experience they’ve built at Grand Pré winery was an honour for us.
